Years ago you used to be able to buy deep mauve coloured violets, now they can't be sought anywhere. Is there any way I could grow them?

Do you mean the ordinary wild violets? Viola papilionacea.
If so, you should be able to grow them easily from seed. Even though some regard them as a weed, they are really beautiful in spring and spread around easily.
If you don't mean these, I wonder which violet you mean.
