The first is Nigella. The second is an Oak seedling, probably buried by a Jay, not a Squirrel as the squirrel nips the root tip off before burying. The last has a look of Dogs Mercury about it though not 100% on that one.

Last one could be mint?

number 1 nigella or commonly known as love in the mist
number 2 could be garden mint

thought the leaves looked like oak, there are 2 huge oak trees up the road. i don't think the last one is mint as i have loads growing all along the back of the house.
I absolutely love the nigella, looks like the seed was dropped cause its right in front of house not in soil, thank you fractal.

3 isnt dogs' mercury I have had to study it and the leaf is less 'intracate'.
i recognise it but cant recall it at all.
1 & 2 are Nigella and an oak as fractal correctly identified

just dashed out to have a sniff, they look very alike, but def isnt mint, these leaves are smooth.

if it helps i have recently dug this area up so this has grown and spread quite quickly

isn't the love in a mist pretty! I like that too, but this year we have less of it self seeded in our garden than usual. No. 3 has everyone foxed but keeps us guessing, we like a mystery. If I didn't know better I'd say fuchsia, can't be though because no evidence of last year's old stems.
Post a pic later please if and when it flowers?

I have decided to grow love in a mist this year, and you can see why.

Whatever the last one is it may just be an annual plant as I think I can see seed leaves (cotyledons) at the base of each stem. Godetia perhaps?

will keep you updated on the mystery, i will also keep my fingers crossed that it is a fuchsia as these were my one of my nanas favourites.

i can def see why Alex, will add these somewhere in my plan.

THe last one I think is spearmint

You can tell if it is a member of the mint family (some of them have little or no scent) if the stems are square.

it has a look of lysmachia to it too. certainly freshly germinates as there are cotyledons visible [will have to rename fractal as hawkeye :o))]

there are 2 other seedlings in here that look like nemophyllia. just above the grass .

Am I right in thinking that pennyroyal looks like a mint but doesn't havee a very minty smell???

2 Jun, 2010

have looked closely at recent pic and think fractal is right it could be dogs mercury....

Why have you changed picture No 2? This is not the Oak seedling you had originally.

7 Jun, 2010

because i think thats what number 3 is but further on, found it by the pond.

I see.
