are there other canadian gardeners here? Do you think our winter is over yet? I'm in SW Ontario, compared to lots of other places I shouldn't complain, but boy, this has been a loooong coooold winter,eh? Are you able to overwinter anything in containers? I'm just starting to use containers, thinking I'll have to stick to annuals.....

Who had that blog with lots of lovely snow pics recently? He was in Canada. And there's a lady with a huge garden who sometimes blogs too - anybody remember who it is?

I talk to a Lady in Canada, I know she is on this site too, I'll get in touch with her and ask her to log in on here. :0))

Steragram thanks for such a prompt reply..I enjoy all the lovely gardens here, but must admit to being more than a bit envious of gardens that don't disappear for 4 months every year....

You're not the first person to ask if there are members from a certain country. Maybe it would be a good idea if the site administrators added a facility to be able search for members by location/country?

hi Ladyessex1...we had a very promising morning today, if I remember correctly it was supposed to go all the way up to 14, but by noon, the temp started to drop, and when I let the boys [2 long haired chihuahuas, Jake and 'lil Joe] out onto the front porch, it was nasty cold again...I don't think it made it all the way up to 14..the forecast for tomorrow is 0c, with ice pellets on Thursday....I feel sorry for the folks on the East coast, they're still getting winter-lke blizzards, and heavy ice storms that have resulted in many people without power..that can be so dangerous in our winters..two weather announcers were blown right of their feet while broadcasting..it was so unexpected, it was funny..they just flew right off the screen... nice talking with you :o]]

Hello Odaapat from the Interior of British Columbia. Last week we still had one foot of snow in most places. Today, other than in shady spots it is all gone. I have just got back from two days away, to Kelowna where they have leaf buds on roses breaking. Not here I might add, I still have Styrofoam huts over the David Austins.
It has dropped to minus overnight but during the day, fairly warm, today 10C. I heard on the radio that out east was in for it. Unbelievable.
The temperatures here can drop to -20C over winter for a couple of weeks but is mostely around the 0 area. I can't overwinter anything in containers. I did one year put Styrofoam around a garden planter full of daffodils and put sawdust between but it made such a mess. I used to dig my containers in to the vegetable garden in autumn and dig them up in the spring. They were rather hefty so I gave up on it. I now empty them in the autumn, of soil, store in shed and replant with annuals for peppers again in spring.
Nice to meet up with someone from Canada thanks to my online friend in the UK, Ladyessex 1.
I haven't been on here for a while, and am not totally familiar with how this system works. I took some photos today on the trip home, over the mountains. I will upload them tomorrow.
When I first came to Canada by ship I landed in Montreal. I was with a girlfriend. We took the train to Hamilton, Ontario and then, the train to Vancouver. It was very beautiful in Ontario but so awfully hot after coming from the UK and the bowels of the ship.

hi Ladyessex1...just readClementine's lovely long letter...been busy with income tax....yuck!...feel free to answer Clementine now...thanks for putting us in touch...that was a kind thing to do......

hi Clementine ....nice to hear from you...I know what you mean about the awful heat here ...our humidity is so high that when we get a rain midsummer it doesn't cool the air at all..it's always sticky....just saps the energy right out of you...spring is the most comfortable time...I have to admit to a large dose of envy..you being in BC...I took myself on a cruise to Alaska a number of years ago, stopped for a few days in Vancouver, got lost in Stanley Park..I made the trip alone, so there I was trying to find the bus stop for the last trip home, I asked a passing young man on a bike for directions..the poor soul told me he was completely lost..had been looking for his car for hours! like you, trees are my favourite plant..I have a lovely canopy of 2 large maple trees over my patio, plan to plant a serviceberry or redbud on the south side this spring..tiny, tiny garden..my late husband and I had a 150 acre farm for 3 years..very flat, treeless..good for crops..3 goats,rabbits,cats,dogs....

Hi Odaapat, I am pleased my letter found you. I am not good at finding my way around here.
Our veg. garden is clear of snow now so I shall sow some lettuce and radish seeds. I start a lot of plants under grow lights and my husband starts his in his greenhouse.
I milked three cows for twenty years, loved it.
I lived in Vancouver for two years and loved it, particularly Stanley Park. I often took my lunch and ate it there. I worked for an investment company. Lighthouse Park was a beautiful spot. I went back once and found concrete paths through it. Spoiled the wild look. One would sink into the needles from the coniferous trees in the old paths which led to the ocean. Many an evening I sat there until dusk. A magical place.
I just ordered a Royal Star Magnolia. Last year we purchased two Sugar Maples. Many maples here. We are all forest, mostly coniferous. Deciduous, maples, cottonwood, birch and aspen.
Good luck with the tax.
Clemie

Hi Clemie..I'm new at this, so unsure of the correct place to post...perhaps this conversation would be better in different form..how do you feel about sharing emails...I don't mean to be pushy, but I would like to continue keeping in touch, and don't want to step on any toes here...what are your thoughts on this? I enjoyed milking the goats, living in the country, watching the turkey buzzards..such graceful fliers, thought we would stay there but sadly no..will you sow the lettuce and radish seeds under lights? I tried that once, got discouraged when my seedlings died, gave up too easily, am contemplating trying again with some annual flowers..I had a saucer magnolia in my old garden , would love a RS, but I'm very limited for space..I had 15 trees in my old back city garden..peach,sour cherry, pear among others..lots of bugs, birds...butterflies...I have mostly ants now !!!
