You will have to find out about each kind pf plant, because different things like to be treated differently. Some thing will produce all leaf and no flower if over fed, and others flower like mad if well fed.

Everything in the wild seems to look wonderful and that certainley doesnt get any feeding so I was thinking why bother really!?

I don't feed anything in the garden after planting. So long as they were given a good start when planted with some good compost and maybe a bit of feed suitable for the plant they should be fine.
Pots, of course, are a different matter. If you don't repot every year into fresh compost they will need feeding. As Bd77 says they all have their own likes and dislikes just as we do.
