just digging through soil to plant some spuds and foun d a load of maggots ewww! how do I get rid? can I still plant here?

Well, I expect the maggots will eventually grow into flies (big consolation.) Maybe there is some sort of dig-through-soil insecticide powder you could get. try googling it.
I can relate to your problem. Mum once found 17 curl grubs in one small pot (the mint in the pot was going badly!
