a good number of my plants have not grown this year,when i have dug them up to see if they had died,i found the root very smelly,but the stange thing i found around the root were little orange like peas pods,which when sweezed ,a liquid spirted out,can anybody please tell me what this is,and why have my plants died

Which plants are you talking about, specifically the ones which had these funny orange pods on? And what's the area like where they're growing - is it near a compost heap, or a drain, or a leaky gutter pipe, that kind of thing.
