Nicotiana sylvestris. I've grown lots of different plants from seed this year, but now I realise that they all want to be planted in full sun - D'oh! I think I've read that Nicotiana sylvestris will grow in shade and I'm wondering how much shade it can cope with? I grew some last year too, but they didn't flower, but I got these going much earlier and they already look more promising. Any ideas folks?

The flowers on this one close in full sun, but all of them only like light shade or sun.

Thanks Bamboo - I'll try them around the edges of the shade then.

I grew some in dappled shade, Sarah - they flowered well.

I'd like to put some under my apple trees - do you think they'd be ok under there Barbara?

I'm not Barbara, but yes, I'd think they would be, that'd be dappled shade.

Thanks both. Final question tho - it's pretty dry under my apple trees as the soil is VERY sharply drained, do you both still think it'll be ok?

Ah, the eternal dilemma - a plant that requires shade, but doesn't like dryness at the roots. If its that dry under there and you're not going to water when necessary, no they won't, unless we have a very wet summer, Sid.

Well, I think we'll just have to hope for a wet summer then..... NO, I DIDN'T SAY THAT REALLY!!!!! lol

Thanks Bamboo. Oh, BTW the geraniums you advised me about keeping over winter, mostly survived - the ones that didn't I think was because I let them dry out too much, but I know better now for next time! Thanks!

Yes, and mine - we have the hose out....now if it would rain at night and stay fine in daylight hours, that would do me fine. :-))))

I've been watering for the last three weeks - but there's rain coming over the weekend here in the south anyway.

Yes - forecast for Saturday here. I've been using cans up to yesterday, but the whole garden was beginning to suffer, so out came the hose. The plants all said 'thank you'! lol.

How do I say thanks?
