My hankerchief tree that I have grown for the past 18 years appears to be dying. Several branches have become brittle and can be easily snapped off. What could have caused this ?

Davidia is only "fairly" hardy, so it may be that the harsh winter has badly affected it. The other thing it doesn't cope well with is drought - I've no idea what your weather's been like there, but here in the south of England, its very dry indeed and has been for a month. If drought is not an issue, then its probably a result of the winter - remove dead wood, cutting back to live areas.
