what small fruit trees are best for taste in a small space

You don't say what fruit you are hoping to grow. Apples/pears/plums/cherries etc. the choice will depend on what you are hoping to grow.

Have a look at this link to find the right size of tree - the eventual size depends on the rootstock. Once you know what size of tree you want you can ask the question again. http://www.thompson-morgan.com/fruit-rootstock-guide

If you mean apples, pears, plums, cherries, etc, there are a lot of fruit trees for sale that have been grafted onto rootstock specifically selected to keep them very small. These dwarf trees are ideal for small spaces and can even be grown in pots.

Most of the large plant and seed company's sell them, but my advice would be to visit a specialist fruit tree nursery and have a word with the nurseryman. He will advise you on what to get and I find that they tend to be very knowledgeable.
