When is the best time to move fairly large rhododendrons and pieris and is it a sensible idea at this time of the year?Thank you so much

Better in the autumn, although if the rhododendrons are very large ( say 5 feet or more) they will have a very extensive root system.

Agree with Bamboo but you may have a challenge with a large rhodo.
