any ideas what the white powdery substance in and beneath my soil could be?
soil is generally good, not clay etc. live in surrey, it looks like frost. thanks Jane

The ground has been frozen very deep this year, with -10 degrees C. The top is only just thawing out. Leave digging for at least two more weeks. The drying March winds will also help to take away the sticky top surface.
