according to Kevin Pratt an acknowledged specialist in these bulbs: buy fresh bulbs and plant x3deep as the bulb is tall in good draining soil. he recommended mixing in perlite or grit into the planting hole. he also recommended planting other things for them to grow through. he talked to our gardening group last week. very enthusiastic chap.

Timely info for me too SBG. i haven't seen such detailed planting tips anywhere else and once again, I realise why I love this site. Fritillaria also have shade appeal which is what attracted me.

watch out for lily beetle once they start to emerge though!
