I have had a vine on a south facing fence for eight years. It produces loads of greenery but this is the sum total of grapes which appeared this year. What do I need to know to get grapes next year as regards pruning, feeding etc?

The most important thing to get right if you want lots of grapes is the pruning. There are many different ways to prune and train a grape vine and there's lots of information on the internet on how to do this but I found a lot of the information confusing. The best way to remember it is that grapes will grow on new shoots that come off one year old wood that was last years green shoots.

You need to cut back the vine to just above the second or third bud coming off the cane. This will seem ruthless, but it will grow very prolific and produce lots of green once again during the summer and hopefully lots of grapes. The pruning needs to be done in December/January when the vine is dormant.

If the vine is in the ground and not in a pot or container then it really isn't necessary to feed it. I don't feed my vine and this year it has about 50+ pounds of grapes on it.

Thank you very much, I will certainly take this information on board. Also, can I contain it as it has grown over onto a very awkward neighbours part of the fence. Thank you for your help.

You could prune back any green growth during the growing season or your neighbour can as they have a legal right to cut back any plants that encroach onto their property but they have to offer you the cuttings and fruit back. Why not come to an arrangement whereby they can keep any grapes that are on there side? Alternatively, when you prune the vine in the winter you can try and train it so it grows more onto your side of the fence. If it's against the fence I doubt if it you will stop all the growth going over the fence but it will certainly be less to chop back.
