looking for effective way of killing moss, chemical or otherwise, in gaps between block paving on drive. tried 'patio magic' with little effect. scraped the top off the moss as instructed then sprayed but weeks later it's all back.
can anyone recommend something that can be sprayed on the moss without having to scrape the top off as i almost scraped the skin off my knees last time!
thanks in advance.

I was fortunate to find a few packets of sodium chlorate that I'd bought before they banned it and I found that this seems to work best. if you can't get hold of any then you could try using a strong bleach solution which is cheap and effective. Don't bother with the expensive brand names or thick bleaches but buy the thin, supermarket own brand, about 29p for 2 liters. I have also heard that salt works, but I've never tried this.

don't doubt that bleach would work but surely that would stain the surface of the block paving?

Regarding bleach staining your block paving Rich, it's the opposite. I have a patio with a block paving border. In late autumn and over the winter the petals, leaves and other things that drop onto it causes staining. In the spring I brush up all the debris, hose it down and then pour a couple of bottles of pure bleach onto it and work it in with a stiff bristled brush. I leave it for an hour or so for the bleach to do its work then hose it down again. Result... A beautiful stain free patio 'till next year.

I have used washing soda crystals, sprinkled fairly generously. If it looks like it'll be dry for a few days, I sprinkle it with water from a can with the rose on. It kills the moss very effectively, which I am then able to sweep up with a stiff broom.

If there is run off from the patio onto apart of the garden do you find the bleach and soda affect the plants? I've used boiling water too and it works well for a while but mine does come back eventually. I heard someone on GQT suggest emptying your used veg water on it instead of down the sink on a regular basis. I did try but soon forgot!

I have to admit that I used it down the side passage, (where it doesn't get much light, so is very shady and damp a lot of the time) There are no plants nearby, but there wasn't any appreciable run-off - I only just wet the soda enough so it stayed where it was. The trouble with moss is that you can get rid of it, but it will always return if the conditions favour it - at least, in my experience.
