Hi Maggie and welcome to GoY. This is also called Eucomis or pineapple lily. In the uk it is grown outside and as long as it is buried deep 6" it overwinters here.
I have several in the ground and some in pots. the ones in pots get brought in and kept frost free over the worst of the winter weather.

don't know how cold you get in Canada. So outside in pots and then brought in over winter would be my advice.

We can get to be quite cold during the winter here in British Columbia so I will put it out now and then over winter it inside. Thanks for the info
