I have 3 wisterias which I have patiently waited for flowers on over the last 6 years and the last 2 years I have had successful flowers which are beautiful and well worth the wait, the only trouble is the flowers were mostly obscured by all of the new leaf growth which was such a shame, they are Chinese Wisterias and I have always followed the pruning instructions - prune in July and then in Jan to 3 to 5 buds. Could you please offer any advise for next years pruning so that my glorious flowers can be seen in all of their glory. Thank you

I think you're doing the right thing, but the plant is confounding you. The seasons, the plant, possibly the situation, are all combining to bring your plants into leaf quickly, and holding back the flower, so the flowers are hidden by the time they open. Japanese wisteria (W. floribunda) flowers with the leaves, and Chinese (W. sinensis) before the leaves. Not a mistake with the species, is it?

I had that problem for the first time this year. Perhaps it's the weather?

I have that problem a bit with my Wisteria 'Caroline' (but less so now it is maturing a bit). It isn't too big so I tend to snip off the developing leaves I see next to the flower buds. This does no harm because the plant soon produces more leaves !

How do I say thanks?
