Could anyone tell me what this plant/tree is that is growing in my friends garden? Also my friend has planted some carrots in a large plastic water tank filled with a mixture of compost, peat and sand as he did a few years ago but this year they have only grown just less than an inch before the bottom has turned upwards making them almost u shaped. Does anyone know why this has happened?

solanum is the blue flowering climber.
the u turn might be due to the compost being very dry and if watered from the top the roots will seek the moisture.
