They won't mind the aspect, but hornbeam does especially well on heavier soils, i.e. ones that tend towards clay and moisture retentive. Therefore, test the site before planting. Too close to the wall and you run the risk of planting alongside the footings alongside which water will drain very freely, thus making the planting site quite dry, and that aint good.
