This may be a long shot but whilst we were up on the N Yorks coast- exact location the moorland between Scarborough and Whitby- I noticed, dotted around, carpets of white flowers growing fairly low to the ground. We have checked our wildflower books etc but can't find anything. We weren't able to stop the car but from a distance they looked a little bit like miniature clematis. They were obviously very happy there. NB not ox eye daisies

I'd go with the cotton grass id personally.

it could be bilberry? only found on moors.

Bilberries don't have carpets of white flowers though.
Just noticed you said on the moors rather than on the cliffs, so sea campion wouldn't be right.

Could it be Eriophorum (cottongrass, cotton-grass or cottonsedge)?
A friend showed me some pictures taken last Monday on Holy Island so it is the right time of year.
