I was told to trim my camellia after flowering to keep to desired size, I don't know the type it has large red flowers. I did this but the new shoots are up to 9 inches already. If I cut back again will I loose next years flowers.

Yep, mostly, although as it sounds quite vigorous, you might pinch the tallest out without losing much. Camellias vary hugely and some are large (20ft plus), but that new growth will soon slow. Be pleased it's doing well.
