why do some potatoes produce flowers and others don't?

I have noticed that some varieties flower in the soil but not when grown in a container. Don't know why that is-but either way you still get a crop.

they all will do in time. its a matter of the plant being mature. I suspect earlies will flower earlier than the other varieties that crop later in the year.
