Is this potato blight or what? Do I need to dig them up? two are affected and another on just starting with one leaf curling.

Ignore the first pic - don't understand how that happened, it should have been another potato shot!

Don't know about the spuds Sue, but I love that patio and path, is it in your garden?, and was it you who had the patience to lay all those bricks?.
Sorry I don't grow spuds, so I can't advise, Derek.

Thanks Snoop. Yes they are proper seed potatoes. I did put in a row of some elderly kitchen ones as well but they are all looking OK. Its only the odd plant affected, most are OK so not likely to be wind damage though we have had plenty of cold winds. Unless the odd plant is, like me, particularly nesh and feels the cold! We haven't had any frost. I thought it was too early for blight too and it doesn't exactly match the blight pic in my book. Will wait and see for a bit.

Thanks Derek. Yes its our garden, and no I didn't lay the bricks! I did a whole series of before during and after pics and meant to do a blog, but never got round to it. It was pretty dire before, so we are very pleased with it and are threatening to charge entry!

I don't blame you Sue, you should be proud of it, it looks great, will wait for the blog, Derek.

Might get around to it in the fullness of time - perhaps when the weather is bad.... The potato problem is spreading! ERK.

So very soon then, "when the weather is bad", sorry about the spuds Sue, Derek.

is it one of the mineral deficiencies? that isn't what I recognise as blight though.

I wish I knew. Its spreading. Interestingly it began in the row I started of under a plastic cloche run. Some rows are unaffected so far.
Derek, wll' see - its been lovely today!

try giving them some Epson salts and see if that makes a difference to the leaf.
though the rhs pest and disease book describes [no picture]one of the viral diseases as an upward curling of the leaves. It advises to grow fresh seed potatoes each year in a new plot. it doesn't say to destroy them, just says over time a loss of vigour and therefore size of crop.

Some of the plants are now definitely on the way out. I think you're on the right track with viral, but it was fresh seed. The only potatoes nearby last year were one or two volunteers.I'll try Epsom salts but without a lot of hope! Thanks for the suggestion.

Solved it - It is potato virus, spread by aphids - nothing to do with infected seed. I've been advised to spray with Cropsaver - never seen it or heard of it so investigations needed.

the crop saver will get rid of the greenfly. dont think the virus will be affected though. But the RHS book says that the crop will over time be less.

No greenfly to be seen at present but will try to remember to take precautions next year. (As lpong as it doesn't contain anything really nasty!)
Thanks again.

How do I say thanks?
