have I left it too late to split a lilly from last year there are lots of shoots but rather than have lots of little weak lillies I would sooner have less but stonger flowers

Agree with Steragram let your lily flower and die back and then lift and split.

Not a lily expert but as they are deep rooted I think it would be safer to wait until its finished flowering. The presence of the offshoots won't affect the quality of the main flower stem.
