thats a pity I was hoping for something quicker? I have been asked by the local primary school for seeds that will germinate and show shoots and roots in about 3-5 days. Tall order !!

Beans, Sbg. We used to give each child a plastic cup and line it with damp kitchen paper - the (runner) bean was placed in between the cup side and the paper - they germinate really fast and show the shoots and roots really well. :-)))

Yup I agree with Barbara - runner beans! I can remember growing them as a child :-)

I had suggested that but they want lots of seeds per kiddy and cheap. I remember doing it with broad beans and mung beans when at uni.

At school I remember soaking bean seeds in warm water first to speed up germination.
Mustard and cress on blotting paper? Just had a thought Sunflower seeds 3 days in heat 65-57 F ?

thanks dot they are doing that already. I think they are trying to get the kiddies to think of ways of comparing different plants. thats why i was thinking of lettuce, small cheap and similar in size to cress etc.

How about mustard and cress, with the top of an egg carton and a piece of kitchen towel, damp on top, round the window sill was the way we did it. Eating it within a week. Broad beans in a jam jar sown between blotting paper and the glass, on the inside fill with wet sand, shows the radical and plumal in 5-6 days.

Try grass seed or corn, both stand better and are as cheap as lettuce.
