What is this plant?

Hello to all of you gardening sleuths. I wondered if I may ask a service of you.
I have attached a photo of a shrub/tree which grows in my back garden. However, I don't know what it is, nor how best to care for it. I am especially keen to know when/how/whether to prune it.
I apologise for the poorness of the photo. This is not it's best time of year. In summer it is covered with flowers, and I would love to know how best to make it happy.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure at all...but wondering if it might be a Weigela..have a look at this page..

http://www.burncoose.co.uk/site/plants.cfm?pl_id=4307

does it look like any of these when in flower? It's just with you saying it's covered with flowers..they are very floriferous. If it's not that, then perhaps you could describe the flowers...colour, size, shape, months it flowers for...that would be a help! :)

Also, if you stay on the burncoose website you might find it by browsing deciduous shrubs and then, if you find it, you could google it to see how to care for it. Hope that helps...sorry, there are hundreds and hundreds of summer flowering shrubs!

Definitely Weigela. There are a few more usually encountered cultivars. Bristol Ruby has blood-red flowers, and is more vigorous than some, up to about 5 ft. We'd need to know flower colour, leaf colour (there are variegated and purple-leafed cultivars), and height before we hazard a guess at naming it. Pruning is light, after main flowering period, so about June/July, and you can then remove some of the oldest growth. The aim is to encourage new vigorous stems, and to give space to the growth that is kept. W

Glad you all think Weigela too. I love the way it is growing like a standard. Has anyone ever seen this before? I wouldn't mind having a go at training one like it!

That's brilliant! I have googled weigela (I must admit that I wasn't familiar with this name) and I am amazed at your talents, because the flowers (which you can't even see in the picture I provided) are exactly like that of a weigela.
And I also noted karensusan6's comment regarding it growing like a standard. It's true that on my google search I could find no photos of any that looked like mine, and yet I have done nothing to "train" it per se (although whether this was done by the house's previous owners who were here five years before ....)
Anyway, I am incredibly impressed and grateful.
With regards to narrowing down its exact type, I shall try to find out more tomorrow with a more thorough internet search and I'll get back to you.
In response to the questions regarding the flower and leaf - it is a red flower, with green leaves (with a slight pointed tip). It is about 4 ft tall (with pruning).
Thank you for your help on this. I already know now that I should wait before pruning, otherwise I will lose this year's flowers - thank goodness for your help, since I was seriously considering cutting it all back.
