can anyone tell me what this plant is? I have probably been caring for a weed! lol

It looks remarkably like a Hellebore foetidus to me. Although it's a native, it has wonderful lime-green flowers in the winter which really brighten things up! Let it flower and see what you think. You should cut the flowering stem off at the base as soon as seed pods appear if you don't want them all over the place, as it's a prolific seeder! I have these in my garden and leave them as they are so cheerful and beautiful in their own way... if you look at the 'my garden' section on my page, on page 2 of the plants in my garden right at the bottom there's a photo of one just beginning to bloom.
