Am absolutely terrified of these guys, hubby goes out, none around, I go out, and ARGH! Sure neighbours hate my bloodcurdling screams, so, any ideas? PLEASE!
Oh that's so nice of you all, and I thank you all for your replies,I am full of admiration for those of you who have ovecome phobias/fears, you understand, lol. I am over my spider phobia, i.e. I no longer run away screaming; blood phobia, havent fainted lately; needles, they're friends now, but the slimy things, well, they are NOT afraid of me, they seem to like me, one came on step next to me 2 weeks ago, still shudder over it, eek, I even left front door unlocked tonight in case one was in back garden to welcome me, oh dear, glad I have 2 friends as mad (not) about them as me!! Where can I buy some chickens? Have good weekend all.

Not really, except - keep the grass short (long, damp grass they love), and don't rootle around the back of shrubs, specially if its shady and likely to be damp there. Even if you have no water in your garden, they'll still arrive, I'm afraid. Perhaps you'll get more used to them over time - I used to freak at the sight of a spider on the other side of the room, never mind next to me in a bush in the garden, but I've got so much better over the years. I still don't like them, but I don't get quite so panicked, after all, you come across them a lot in gardens.

Do you have a pond? If so then you will need to get rid of as both frogs and toads like ponds. Manicure your garden area to such an extent that there is nothing there for a frog or toad to enjoy...

Then start worrying about slugs, snails and other nasties which the frogs and toads were eating for you.

Sorry I don't want to be rude but we need frogs and toads to deal with a lot of other creatures we really don't want in our gardens.

If you are phobic about them then the manicured, no where for them to be, approach should work.

Hi Ange, it's such a shame really as they are so helpful to have around. They eat slugs etc. :~)))

We posted together then MG. Great minds think alike and I copy them. Lol

They are friends to your garden think of the pest they eat.

What a shame, they are the gardener's friends, did you have a 'Billy Bunter experience' some time. I believe that there are people who can rid you of phobias, it must be quite disturbing for you. I once knew someone with a phobia about moths.I have a phobia, Celebrity/reallity TV, it gets right up my nose [G)

I grew up with a mother who was totally phobic around spiders... She made sure this rubbed off on her two daughters. I worked at my phobia, along with one one snakes thanks to my father and can now claim to be phobia free (though I do not like earwigs... not a phobia just a dislike). I didn't attend any classes or courses just worked away at it by myself...

To the best of my knowledge my sister is still totally phobic about all sorts of things thanks to mother.

Ange try to get to know your frends a lady I know had a pond put in to her garden when I asked what fish she was going to put in the pond 'she said it's not for fish it is for frogs and toeds, they are not hansome princes I admit ,but they are better looking than big black and orange dirty slugs

I do sympathise with your reaction, I know you can't help it, Ange! I had a client once whose garden was chock full of them, and she was the same as you - would run screaming down the garden if one jumped out. I saw her recently, and she tells me she's now able to control the reaction to some extent, but still doesn't like them.

I`m like you I loathe them but realize that if I want shrubs and a pond there the price I pay, so when I`m messing about in these areas the only solution for me is to wear wellies. At least like this I know I wont feel it if the jump on my feet.

Its earwigs that bother me I try my best to avoid them and their favorite hidey holes.

Ponds do attract frogs toads and of course newts
We found this out when we added our pond to our back garden. My daughter even nicknamed our toad Trevor

I have frogs in the garden I was gardening the other day and had a frog for company.(The cats had deserted me it was to cold.)I can cope with most things but not earwigs.

I do sympathise but the habitual reaction/phobia can be overcome. Promise!

I think one of the problems with frogs/toads is the suddenness of their appearance......and if one is tensely awaiting that then the next stage is for the adrenaline to power in and the startle reflex to be invoked, resulting in shrieking and jumping away.

To my amazement I have learned to cope over the years with all the things that made me shriek and leap away in horror, starting with woodlice (granddaughter kneels down next to them saying "Oh GG, aren't they lovely?), earwigs (ugh), slugs, and worst of all vine weevil grubs. No one else to deal with them for me meant that if I wanted to garden I had to inhibit my habitual response, relax my tensed up neck muscles, and get on with it.....the Alexander Technique helped enormously. (www.stat.org.uk for more info)

My niece managed to deal with a spider phobia by going to a workshop - at the end of one day she was caressing a large black furry spider....so it can be done.

The solution is not to get rid of the frogs and toads but to cure you of your phobia. Frogs and toads are wonderful for a garden and destroy many of our pests.
I know phobias are horrible and very real to people and no laughing matter. Have you tried asking for help to be desensitized to your fears. This is not mumbo jumbo but simply facing your fear of them in a state of complete relaxation, by first thinking about them, and gradually little by little having them near you, and finally even touching them and picking them up.
It really works, and might even be available on the NHS if you have a sympathetic GP.

...chickens like a nice tasty frog!! Not much fun watching the destruction though!

oh bless your heart. My fear/phobia is moths and butterflies! am much better with butterflies since i started gardening but eugh cold sweats/nausea.complete panic and running round like a loon. As the other guys and gals have said try as hard as you can to bit by bit get to know about them. Maybe watch a bit of a programme about them, read a bit about them. Think about the good that comes of them...building up to eventually being able to cope with them being around

I wish you all the best with this

There is a very simple technique to learn how to deal with all phobias. I have used it to 'cure' many people of their various fears and it can be done so easily. PM me if you would like more info!
