Why are my butternut squashes only growing to about 4" and then rotting this year

I live in Devon and have been able to grow butternut squashes on previous years but this year they just will not grow. The plant is very healthy and spreading like wild fire.

That's odd.....do you grow the plants in the same place each year and if so do you enrich your soil each year? Just thinking the soil might be exhausted?
