Every time I come on goy my skin crawls as mice and rats are all over the top right of the page. I've tried turning them off as suggested by someone in answer to an earlier question but it has not worked. I can click on them and make them so big I can't see the offending beasties but I still know they are there. I'd be grateful if the boys declined the ads in future. Any help on how to get rid of them appreciated.

I have noticed this site seems to have a lot of adverts over the last few months to the point that I have had to come off the site and go back on to read a question or blog also these unwanted blogs the we get everyday caused me all sorts of problems the other day when I opened a link by mistake I had to do a full computer restore that took hours and also lost a few photos that I had not had time to back up. I have not noticed the rat advert but I will now. Can the site administrators not block these ads before they appear.

There was a blog on here about this and how to block them on your computer. Several of us did this and it works' Go to google 'ad block' or ' ad block plus' and follow instructions it is free and removes those annoying ads on here and on your emails

15 Nov, 2012

AdBlock Plus is indeed the Add-on you want. Also Do Not Track Plus is good too.
I do not get any adverts on here.

15 Nov, 2012

Just found the instructions from Inverglen on how to do it. I bless the day I was told how to use this service.

15 Nov, 2012

I used the adblock, all it did for me was to swap ads, the rats and dementia and even a very unsavoury one with oriental ladies wanting to meet me, lol.
I followed instructions from Terra, now have google for Goy and its ad free.....

15 Nov, 2012

I haven't seen an ad on here since I switched on an adblock plus

15 Nov, 2012

I have had a similar experience to Linclass. I tried following instructions to google Adbock and after trying to dowload it got a message saying my provider has blocked dowload of the programme because it will give me problems. Come visit soon son, before your poor mother is totally gaga. Thank you everyone for your imput.

Bit puzzled by Lincslass's comment. Been using Adblock for a long time now and never have any problem with ads on here. It will not stop the PM's offering strange things, but nothing stops them except reporting.
One does have to Block the Ads though when they appear.
If you Block the position where the advert appears, then that stops any advert appearing in that position.

I tried that Owdboggy only to have different ones appearing when I moved pages, across the top and to the side of the pages, some were distasteful to me, lol, I was never able to clear them off the questions page at all, it was very frustrating, however google chrome has got rid of them completely for me, I also don`t appear to have any probs signing in now as sometimes happened in the past but thats perhaps just coincidence, only time will tell ,lol....

15 Nov, 2012

And I have not seen it at all you must be unlucky.

15 Nov, 2012

I've never seen rats or mice on here either - Scotsgran, try this. Type into Google Isme, or Wallis or BHS, select the online shopping option, doesn't matter what department, let's pretend you're shopping for women's clothes. Have a look at a page or 2, then come out. You should find the next time you come on GoY, what you're seeing is Isme or Wallis or BHS, whichever one you chose, on the top right.

I`m guessing its also to do with our own settings as well, I have to be careful as I`m not really clued up on such things so am always pleased when given advice by the members, it kept me occupied one night finding the one that worked for me, I really didn`t want to chat with the oriental ladies and I don`t think they`d be interested in our gardens, lol...

15 Nov, 2012

Not rats and mice for me!

I have been getting regular propositions from sometimes nude women.

Now at my age I don't mind the flattery, but sadly at my time of life, these ladies of the night are rather wasting their time on me!

Now the question is;

Do I use the add block or not ? ;o))

15 Nov, 2012

LOL, decisions! decisions!!!!!! you said you were gonna hibernate Teegee....

15 Nov, 2012

I seem to get ads for compost no matter what site I'm visiting!!

15 Nov, 2012

Hmm,that's odd, I've just been on Amazon looking at various things and that isn't appearing on here. Must mean Amazon doesn't leave a cookie for Google ads on GoY to follow... I've got sheds instead, which I've not looked at.

15 Nov, 2012

Do Not Track Plus will stop other sites from putting adverts on here when you have been to other sites.

15 Nov, 2012

Just out of curiosity, I`ve been over on aol to access here and I have sheds and Hillary`s blinds and furnishings, also ads for pages for nintendo games and final fantasy, I`ve been shopping for xmas and they`ve picked up on the pages, with the G`Chrome I`m free of them all....

15 Nov, 2012

I always use Google and have neve seen an ad on here, just a plain green surrounding the pages, didnt know there were sometimes ads. on here.

15 Nov, 2012

I don't mind the rats and mice, but my skin always crawls because I keep getting adverts for I Spy a Bird :o((( I hate them :o( I don't want to see them on my screen.
I've been able to get rid of the dating adverts - don't know how I did it, but I think I clicked on something, and I don't get them any more ...

But the adverts help keep the site free.

15 Nov, 2012

I know Hywel, it was the dating ones I objected to and when the oriental one started to come up then I really was very cross!!!!!!!!!

15 Nov, 2012

Yes I agree Sue. They really irritated me too.
However I can ignore most of them ... but the bird ones do upset me - especially the one with a big fat Grouse (or something) on it :o(

15 Nov, 2012

I get the odd one but the one that makes me laugh is the one that offers a tip to get a flatter belly. How did they know I needed to? Never looked at diet/exercise tips on line so ........
The males in the dating site make me realise how lovely my OH is.

15 Nov, 2012

I guess, as others are saying, these ads keep the site going, free of charge to the most of us? like all these internet pages, there are costs...

... Though while on the subject - I'm told that, at social gatherings (!) these days, the most withering thing you can say when someone tells you that they object to apparently random ads on their pages is, "did you know how sophisticated these internet marketing targetting people are these days, they tailor their ads to the individual user..."

!? What!!! Alas, here on the GOY page, though I've never yet had Rats, I do get (French) carpets and antiques sales at the top of the page (what on earth demographic survey tells them I could afford them!), and gaming sites down the sides (I never gamble), computer games (in my nightmares...) and dating sites (I'm almost tempted to send them my photo, that might stop them!) It would be non-P.C. to tell you what kind of males they seem to have figured out would be suitable for me (but, yes, I agree, I can do better without their aid...!)

Occasionally they DO post one for funeral costs - that probably annoys me almost as much as the Rats would!

15 Nov, 2012

"I have been getting regular propositions from sometimes nude women"

I think I may have to get rid of that adblock program as I'm missing out!

;^)

15 Nov, 2012

Like Lizziebee,I use Google..and since this site was changed a while ago now,I was advised to use adblock..and I've had no adverts since..just a plain green border down each side...heaven ! ...

15 Nov, 2012

LOL, don`t do it you`ll end up with the wrong ad Anchorman, thats sods law.....

15 Nov, 2012

I dread to think of the social circles some might circulate in. Sad to say Monjardinira I refuse to wither since I have never, nor has anyone else with access to my computer, visited sites advertising rat or mice repellants, nor internet dating sites. The fact that anyone would think we had is enough to make me want to leave GOY. I find them really offensive and would worry that these things would appear if my grandchildren were using the computer. I have been off goy for other reasons of late but find I can't stay on for any length of time with these awful adverts in my face.

15 Nov, 2012

hi scotsgran that was my point, that we don't visit these sites but somehow some computer thingy out there targets us. I think if you use the internet probably a pair of blinkers (watch the site you want, and then avoid the adverts for cheap pearl gifts all around for Christmas, etc.) is the best strategy. As for worrying what your grandkids can access, I think (as a grandmother - of two girls, 14 & 10) that they probably know more (and/or worse!) than we ever will.

ps me too (I also) to others, responding - I have had those" losing weight" adverts... I refuse to believe they're targetted personally!

16 Nov, 2012

hey folks this morning re adverts, I've got Alice Temperley Clothing at John Lewis (now how does me looking up for comfy rectangular pillows - we can only get square ones here in France - generate that?)

Mind you, wish I could fit into them (the clothes not the pillows) - and that it would go with my essential wellies...

16 Nov, 2012

Strangely, after I ordered an electronic pest control gizmo I got lots of rats and mice across the top. Just been looking at hotels and now the beasties have gone and I've got hotel ads along the top!! I think it's related to what you search for online.

16 Nov, 2012

AArgh! Now the mice are back!!

16 Nov, 2012

As I said in the middle of this discussion, download Do Not Track Plus as an Add-on for IE, Firefox and Chrome. We no longer get any targeted adverts since we are not followed across the Interweb thingy.
There does not seem to be an Adblock add on for IE except one you have to buy. All the more reason to swap to Firefox or Chrome as your Browser.
Sorry but that seems to be the only way round it.

16 Nov, 2012

ah well, owdboggy, the worst that the ads have to offer me is a plea to "jouer maintenant" (play now). I can't think how they see this person who has never entered a bet as a gambler (maybe it's 'cos I read Dick Francis detective novels?) as a target. But it's still our choice to look at them (I never did, until this discussion thread). I hope you're right and that you've successfully blocked them for yourself but as a former copyright manager married to an IT person, I'm inclined to be sceptical...

never mind, there are GOOD things to this swapping of info out there, yeah? (or we wouldn't be on this site)

16 Nov, 2012

I am far more worried about who else is tracking our Internet usage, not particularly advert targeting.

16 Nov, 2012

Thanks Owdboddy, for all your help, including finding there is no way to rid Internet Explorer of them. I think I will remove this blog as the problem seems to be even worse since I wrote it.

16 Nov, 2012

I think Owdboggy has a good point,Scotsgran.. I moved from Internet Explorer to Firefox, and no problems at all..or at least someone did it on my behalf,as I'm not a Computer whizz,by any means ..

16 Nov, 2012

Well, I've got a big ad for TalkTalk broadband on now, and as they are my internet provider anyway, I wonder just how sophisticated the targeting actually is!

16 Nov, 2012

I use Firefox and Adblock and never have any ads at all.

19 Nov, 2012

Ditto,Steragram..

20 Nov, 2012

Thank you all for your replies. I'm taking this blog off in the next 24 hours. I've noted all the advice and will not comment on the outcome just in case it raises spectres of things I loathe. I'm wondering if I can get the RSPCA to declare these ads a danger to health. Its one thing knowing (according to the pundits) that you are never more than a few metres from the nearest rat but its torture being constantly reminded of it.

20 Nov, 2012

All the ads have gone now, after installing AdBlock. (If I ever need compost, I'll have to search for it!)

How do I say thanks?
