cutting back a leucothoe scarletta

I have been given the above plant it is growing up a stick at the moment, dont know the plants likes or dislikes yet, when to cut back it is about 3ft highat the moment planted outdoors, should it be next to wall or out on its own.

This is a free-standing, arching shrub that prefers light shade. Only cut it back in winter; if cut while growing, it will bleed badly (and possibly fatally)
