North facing rockery

Birmingham, United Kingdom Gb

I have a north facing rockery which has not been touched for over a year. I have tidied it up and put a few plants in but now want to add some colour all year round. Can anyone please advise what plants/heathers would be appropriate.

It's a bit late in the season for this year. but you could still plant heathers or lavenders which will give you some lovely colour in the coming months.

I would add to that some bulbs for Autumn planting. Such as miniature daffs in groups, tiny irises and cyclamen "coum". Plus small crocuses. Then sempervinums and saxifrages. Maybe some grasses, not too tall, like Festuca.
Hope it looks lovely next year.

Plants really depends on the size of your rockery... and whether you are wanting serious rock garden/alpine plants or just plants to fill it up.

Take a look at http://www.backyardgardener.com/alpinlist.html which has an extensive list of rock garden plants for all soil types and aspects.

Tulsalady I wouldn't say it was late to be planting a rock garden, the plants will have plenty of time to settle before winter.

No biggy... we will continue to plant things out for around another month, friends in Edinburgh planted their crevice bed in October last year. Alpines might look like wee delicate little things but many are actually as tough as old boots - they have to be to survive in the wild.

I doubt whether true alpines and usual rock plants would really be happy in a North facing situation. The website quoted should be useful though, so long as it includes some suitable for the situation.

You'd be amazed at the number that happily grow on the north face of mountains Mad and I think the site I directed Kiwijenx to actually gave info for a north facing rockery
