What should I do with Sweet Pea Pea pods at end of summer

United Kingdom Gb

I have turfed out the peas from the pods and am keeping them currently in a paper cup. How do I use them again for next year or can I simply plant them in the rockerys now?

By all means keep the sweet pea seed dry - in a paper bag with the name on - and then sow them in pots (nice deep ones - they have LONG roots and don't do so well in shallow trays ) - either early in the new year or if you have the energy at Xmas (!) That way you get nice sturdy plants (having pinched out their tops to keep them bushy) early on and you should get a fine show. I certainly would not plant them right now.Other people may think differently!
Personally I start with fresh seed each year - which won't go down well with everybody I know!

Sweet peas come relatively true from seed so they are worth keeping. I'm not sure I'd plant them in a rockery tho??!!

I just bought sweet pea seed and this is what it says:
Culture: Sow January-March under glass in gentle heat or in April-May outdoors for flowers June-September. Can also be sown in September-October in a coldframe or greenhouse to overwinter in frames to produce earliest blooms.

EEK! Something more to keep an eye on over the winter - no thanks! Either the slugs would enjoy "breakfast in bed" or mice would have a field day in the cold frames as usual - always saying they didn't succumb to botrytis in the meantime! It must be old age catching up but I 'll just keep life simple and start them off as early as I do everything else in my greenhouse..on the 2nd of March!!

Hi Sid..because - being "alzheimer" ( if you believe that ha ha )....I can't forget the 2nd of march - it's me birthday!!!!
My treat to myself (having nobody to treat me...(don't all start playing the violin!) ...is to potter in the greenhouse..sowing all my toms and courgettes...whatever the weather.

Oh I see. And I wouldn't want you to break with tradition in case it's bad luck or something lol Greenhouses are great for that kind of thing arn't they....I completely lose myself in mine - happy, happy, happy... ;-)
