Reducing height of conifer tree that is 5ft by half

Ornimental clipped tree 3ft plus wide and 5ft high to reduce this by at least half. Is if feasable to reduce height and then take out a cone interior, tying together the outer branches to make it all green and round again. Would it grow like this?

Leylandii wont grow if you trim it back into the dead brown wood, and youll be left with an unsighltly patch. Any idea of its name?

Depends on the variety of conifer- if its leylandii of any description, it wont' care what you do. Most of the others, though, do not appreciate hard pruning and react badly.
