The winter blues...

Hi everyone this is my first ever blog as I only discovered GOY a little while ago when my gardening year was already finished!!
I don’t really do winter gardening as whatever I do my 2 babies come too and although my 3 yr old son loves being outdoors in all weathers my 6 month old daughter is a bit too young! Also I live in a flat so I don’t have the option of waiting ‘til baby sleeps then nipping outside as outside is a fair way down!! Don’t get me wrong, when we have dry mild days I’m out there weeding and pottering about but how many of those days are we likely to get here in Essex?
So, I was just washing up the breakfast things looking down at my poor garden in the crisp sunshine, my 5 or 6 little Gazanias are open and bright yellow/orange but that’s it. I have a couple of beautiful big shrubs (I don’t know what they’re called as they were here when I moved in) but I’m a flower person, I love colour! My veggie patch is empty, aside from all the leaves, my tulip and daffodil bulbs are planted and hidden away under the soil and it kind of gave me the winter blues! (I know it’s not even winter yet!) I thought to myself “Get on GOY and look at everyone elses gardens to cheer yourself up” so I have done and it worked, those of you that are not fairweather gardeners like me are still doing a fabulous job and I want to say thanks for keep posting your photos, I am really enjoying them.

Welcome to GoY Sal.
There are members with all shapes and sizes of gardens on here and it is good to share ideas through blogs and photos.
Whilst you are waiting for better weather to return you can always concentrate on houseplants and herbs in pots on the windowsill it will help with the Winter Blues :~)))

Hi princesssal84. Welcome to GOY, glad to have you on board, there are a lot of pictures to look at over the winter months. Look forward to seeing your garden. I am an all weather gardener, spent 4 blissful hours in the garden day before yesterday, will probably be out there later, the sun is lovely, but quite cold.

We've had nothing but rain and thunderstorms and hail this morning, and temps of 10 degrees.
The ground/grass is SO wet that it'd make a horrible mess if i did what i wanted to do out there :-(
I've bought quite a few shrubs over the past couple of weeks but due to muscular problems, then busy work and now all the rain they're just sitting in their pots waiting to go out.
I'm going stir-crazy :-(

Just have to looking at everyone elses pictures again !

Hi Sal, welcome from me too. It doesn't matter what sort of gardener you are, you'll find plenty of inspiration on here. You may have to wait until your children are older to have the garden you really want but in the meantime enjoy sharing it with them (and us) when you can.

Thanks for the welcome everyone! Pipsqueak that's a great idea I hadn't thought of before- indoor plants, that will lift my mood! And Lily you're probably right, I have loads of visions for my garden but they will probably wait 'til my children are older and I can dedicate my time to it a bit more. Bring on the spring! Then I'll be able to share photo's of my garden with you guys) I'm now going to look at all the new photo's as it looks like it's gonna pour down outside! xxx
