I have the Sarcococca Hookeriana Barbara , the scent from that is amazing to , I remember the day I brought it home in the car , it was almost overpowering in the enclosed space ,
I can't see very much if any difference between the two , can you ?

I just looked them up in my A-Z, and they do look very similar!

I thought so to ...

9 Feb, 2010

Oh well, as long as they both have the lovely scent, I'm not too bothered which one I have - are you?

9 Feb, 2010

It's not very interesting the rest of the year, unfortunately, but I think it's worth having in the garden!

9 Feb, 2010

Both true! :-)

10 Feb, 2010

thats lovely barbara, especially against shiny leaves ;o))

10 Feb, 2010

I have a Hookeriana too Spritz and agree totally....amazing aroma.......

10 Feb, 2010

Strange when the flowers are so small, isn't it!

10 Feb, 2010

Very pretty flower and a bonus with the scent!

11 Feb, 2010

You have to get up close to look at the flowers, Pp - they are small. It's a useful shrub, as it doesn't mind shade at all.

11 Feb, 2010

Very pretty flower. Does it have a beautiful heady jasmine kind of fragrance ? Why do think it's confusa?? (means confused in Italian!)

12 Feb, 2010

It's a very heady scent, Terry, and it's probably confused because it's so like S. hookeriana! LOL. Sono una donna confusa!

12 Feb, 2010

A lovely pic Spritz. I'm really glad that it gets such good reports from you and the others as I bought a small one in a local nursery a few weeks ago. Seems I did something right at last!

13 Feb, 2010

Oh, you'll enjoy the scent, Toto! My problem is that I haven't got a shady area near the house - it would be great to have this near the door. I have to walk across the garden to get to it.

13 Feb, 2010

Ah! Two things I got right then as I have planted this, not too far from the house. Wonders will never cease.

13 Feb, 2010

Is it in flower now? Have you put your nose near it yet? :-)))

13 Feb, 2010

Yes it is in flower and it smells fantastic. I can't wait until it gets bigger.

13 Feb, 2010

Sorry - patience is needed there. That's one of my failings - I want everything to happen yesterday. :-(((

13 Feb, 2010

Me too but the smaller one was cheaper!

13 Feb, 2010

That's OK - it'll grow! :-))

13 Feb, 2010

mine doesnt seem to have a scent :o( unless it is too cold for it.

they are a pretty plant though. I like the clean green this has.

14 Feb, 2010

Strange - the scent is very strong!

14 Feb, 2010

My sarcococca is just outside the kitchen door its so nice to step outside just for a sniff of its heavenly scent. As it grows bigger the scent grows stronger. :o)

16 Feb, 2010

Wish I could have mine closer - but it's not possible. Nice to know that they do grow and get even more scented!

16 Feb, 2010

beautiful spritz..

16 Feb, 2010

Thanks! :-)

I think Seaburn's right - I've noticed you can't smell it very much if the weather is very cold when it flowers, much more noticeable in mild spells. And in case anyone's interested, hookerania only reaches 4 feet, whereas confusa gets to 5 feet (and doesn't have suckers like the others)

16 Feb, 2010

Thanks, Bamboo - that's useful to know. :-))

17 Feb, 2010

I picked up a hookerania this christmas and like it so much I was thinking of making a low hedge beside my patio (N facing) has anyone experience of using it as hedging? All the photos appear to be very small plants?

10 Feb, 2011

Well - look at Bamboo's comment, James. It could work! :-)

10 Feb, 2011

I have seen this plant at Newstead Abbey they have interplanted with ordinary box and made very good hedge and the smell in winter is brilliant
