I have this trained as a standard. I'm hoping it will flower this year, but the foliage alone is very pretty.

How funny we both have the same large Rhododendrons, a standard? that's interesting, never seen a standard one before..as you say the foliage is lovely.

Dotty if it's going in the garden place it carefully may be only 5ft high but the one here is ten feet across flowers on mine are the typical Ponticum purple ,but there may be other shades bred in to them.

Lovely foliage ,I wouldn't have thought of growing one as a standard either ,thats going to give Peter ideas Angela !

I bought it from Dobbies, already trained Amy. I wanted something tall and shade tolerant for the NW facing corner. Something that would tolerate a pot. So it seemed ideal.

BJs it is going in the garden in semi shade, we will make sure it has plenty of room, how fast do they grow? and thanks for the info.(i am hoping it will be purple)
Ha ha Amy, yes Peter does like making standard plants, but it will not be this one, we need it to take up a corner of the garden......

Dotty as you can imagine mine has been there a long time, they did use ponticum for grafting on to not sure if they still do, so quite vigorous. they prune easy But you take out half one year and half the second year otherwise you remove all the flowering buds and are left with green leaves for a year.

Some breeders still use Ponticum.
I am hoping by the time they need pruning Brian I shall have long gone....... lol!! have just ordered another, Rhododendron Luteum from our favourite nursery where we bought 95% of our plants when we lived in the Midlands Ashwood Nurseries, have never ordered online from them before, but, being as we know the owner if it is a awful plant I shall be on the phone....just looked at their snowdrop collection, very impressive, some real beauties!!
