Mango tree 2022. (Mangifera indica (Mango))

Looking like a tree these days. Rounded crown even. It skipped flowering after a January freeze zapped it. Why it was flowering in January I can't explain. It might do that again this year- fingers crossed it waits until February. That's past our frost season.

I realize now that theses tree grow about 12" a year. That's a 20 year wait until it reaches a real tree size. Some may do better planted where its in full sun dawn to dusk though.
Still, its a longer wait than for most fruit trees. Be patient!

Stan,

Your mango tree looks awesome! Hopefully it’ll fruit again next summer!

I’ve seen the mango trees here put out flowers pikes as early as late November. Most tend to push them out late January or early February, though.

I have the Ataulfo still going. It seems to want to be more shrub than tree like for now. It also looks better then the Manila in the photo. Darker green leaves and when it flushes the leaves are truly red. Still,Manila grows faster and had many fruits- two years ago.
Somethings like Croton I've given up on...Mangifera is still worth the effort. It just takes so long.

It’s definitely worth the wait.

When I was in the Bay Area a few weeks ago I saw a large mango tree next to my friend’s house (where I stay). It was a little larger than your tree (it appears to be in the middle of the back yard). I was surprised it looked so good considering my friend said it was pretty cold in January. It was full of new growth and looked very good. I can’t believe I didn’t get a pic! The day I flew in to San Jose International Airport, it was 105 degrees.

The one on Tennyson didn't flower this year either. No panicles.
They love heat and don't need much water really. A tall wall reflecting heat or in the middle of a concrete cutout to further add heat and some winter dryness to the roots. You just cant plant them anywhere like you can temperate fruit trees. They need a push.

Thanks for sharing, Stan. The information is pretty fascinating too. I envy you, having fresh mangoes.

Thanks Kate. Growing them in the San Francisco Bay Area has been on a higher level then pre 21st century. In those years,a real killing frost for them would be at least every 5-10 years. At least they are now over the hump of year to year and you can think of them in 10-20 years,at least. Going for more since they are relative slow growers too.
Today the new leaves are twice as long and red. I should have waited to post a growth in progress pic!

Looking forward to seeing your next pic and the progress!
