Strawberries & Geraniums in greenhouse on balcony 2010-12-13 001 (Fragaria x ananassa (Garden strawberry))

This is a close up photo of one of the Strawberry plants, with small fruits, that I have in the greenhouse on balcony with some Geraniums.

I photographed them on December 13th 2010.

Unbelieveable!

Yes, they are keeping well at the moment. When we had the hard frosts I covered them with several sheets of newspaper, I imagine I will have to do the same again in the coming days with the extremely low temps forecast. :-((
I was rather surprised to see that the Strawberry plant had set berries! I doubt they will survive to ripen.

That is very good Balcony.

Amazing, Balcony, fruiting strawbs and flowering geraniums at this time of year. :-))

I was amazed, too, when I saw the fruits on the strawberry plant! I'd seen the flowers but I didn't expect them to be fertilized!

The Geranium in flower is a cutting of the cuttings you sent me, David! There are a couple more as well. They were still alive a couple of days ago when I opened the plastic covers to put my trays of garlic cloves on the floor of the greenhouse!

Oh, now I recognise the geranium/pelargonium "Black Velvet". I never could get the flowers to show up as pale pink in pics. Thank Goodness I, too, took some more cuttings, and brought indoors to root, as the ones outdoors in containers, which were blooming away happily 2 weeks ago, are now buried deep under frozen snow. :-(((

I do hope that the strawbs make it. Very exciting!!!!

Some how they are surviving the terrible frosts we are having!

I opened the greenhouse today for a few hours, there was a horrible smell of ammonia - I thought at first a cat had got in & urinated there but I saw no sign of urine. When I closed it up the smell had gone. Could it possibly have come from the garlic cloves I planted on Friday & put on the floor of the greenhouse? The other times I've opened it after longer periods there has been no smell.

I'll keep you informed of the progress the strawberries make - if any!

I know who to turn to if mine don't make it then! ;-)) (The geraniums, I mean)
