Carob tree is an extremely widely grown here in CA. They are very widely grown as street trees in the San Francisco Bay Area...even though the roots lift the sidewalks. Photo taken in Balboa Park, San Diego on June 3, 2010.

This tree is still a baby. Carob trees can grow to 60 feet/ 20 meters tall with equal spread.
Actually, it grows quite differently from olive trees. Carobs tend grow very large and have a huge rounded or oval crown. Olive trees tend to have a more upright and rounded crown. Very large, very old olive trees are grown in California from the Mission Days.(they are reported to live about 3,000 years) Olives are also commercially grown in the Central Valleys of CA.

Their form reminds me of olive trees .... short and squat and greyish.
