Much To Do

Much To Do (Asclepias syriaca Common Milkweed)

The Monarch butterfly now has many things to do. He must slide out of the chrysalis and catch hold so he doesn't fall. Once he has a good hold he must start to pump the fluid from his fat abdomen into his wings. He must also "zip" his proboscis. As you can see in the pic his proboscis (mouth part) is in two pieces. He must zip it together to form one hollow piece or he will not be able to sip nectar. Sometimes butterflies fall and can not inflate their wings properly and they can't fly. Sometimes they aren't able to zip their proboscis and they can't eat. But many times everything goes just right.
