Amaryllis belladonna

Amaryllis belladonna (Amaryllis belladonna (Belladonna lily))

The pink form is starting to flower just as the white ones are fading. Here it is growing through some bracken. This is used along stretches by the roads, and in some places has developed into huge colonies.

We have, for the summer, hydrangeas and agapanthus. Then these for the late summer. The roundabouts have pansies and red daylilies. Then you can see fields and roadsides that are overrun with a bright yellow oxalis. Just coming to an end is Hedychium garderianum.

They're beautiful, Wylie! Are you sure they aren't xAmarcrinum, instead? The Belladonnas that I have grown before had more funnel form flowers, and broader petals. The proof is in the leaves: Amaryllis has strap shaped leaves with rounded tips, while xAmarcrinum has leaves that taper to a long, tail-like tip.

I am going by the ID of the University of the Azores
www.azoresbioportal.angra.uac.pt/index.php?lang=en
These grow all over the place, on all the islands, yet are not endemic to the Azores. The leaves are strap shaped & rounded, but not as large as the white ones. I have the xAmarcrinum, but I'm still waiting for it to flower. It is definitely not Lycoris squamigera, which is also confused with the Amaryllis.

OK. They should know! :) Maybe I just had a different form.
Yes, the Lycoris has a similar growth habit, but smaller flowers in denser clusters.

Tug,why no photos from you? And the great Arizona Highways as I recall from my youth.

Arrgghh! Poverty plus technical incompetence on my part. I haven't been able to afford a camera, and now that I have a phone with a camera, I have been reluctant to interface my probably infested phone with my definitely infested computer. When as and if I can afford a camera--getting more likely--you'll see some pictures from the beautiful State of Arizona, though probably not Arizona Highways quality! :)

I rode my bicycle across Arizona in 1994, and it was much nicer than New Mexico, so I hope to see photos sometime soon. I remember Arizona Highways - great photos.
