Rose cactus is a true cactus...which grows tree-like to more
than 20 feet / 7 meters tall. This is for my GoY friend Sandra.
Photo taken at Quail Botanical Gardens on July 7, 2009.

Hywel:
Are they available at your nurseries?
Pereskia is very easy to grow. It grows very quickly in the ground especially when established...I've seen one cut to the ground and grow more than 12 feet/ 4 meters in one summer. Of course, in a pot they grow much slower.

I've never seen one in any nursery. I'll have to try on line I think. I'd have to grow it in a pot. It could be killed if it became frosted in the winter. I didn't realise they grew so tall

Hywel:
A specialty succulent nursery would probably carry this cactus. This plant will not tolerate freezing temps especially if wet...it will rot and die quickly. It is a dry tropical cactus native to Brazil.
This cactus in the ground grows enormous. I have posted some large plants in the ground in the past.

Yes I've seen your other photos aswell.
I have lots of cacti but we get too much rain here to leave them outside for a long period. I keep them under cover.

Hywel:
It sounds like you have a good place for your cacti. Most are very hardy as long as they receive little or no rain during the winter. I'm sure you already know this though.

Good luck finding a Pereskia!

I have the variegated. Sensitive to winter rains and of course frost. After almost losing it in December, its made a nice comeback. I made sure to use plenty of fertilizer and often.

I had a few a while back and they all died. I think I may have over-watered them. Oops!

I've always wanted a Pereskia. I'll have to try and get one for my collection.
