is it thorny and good as a deterent?

No Seaburngirl It isn't thorny and seems to stay at most 1ft. high, but so tangled I think it would keep out a lot of animals. The one in the picture is at least ten years old. I have never propagated it, goodness knows why., but I will have a try.
