Thanks Marann - taking the photo was easy but I imagine planning and planting these garden beds would be lots of hard work.

Bernieh:

I love the color! Very vibrant!

I see a whole lot of Wodyetia bifurcata - Foxtail Palms in the background.
They look so lush and beautiful!

They were stunning - there must have been around twenty of them in a row.

Bernieh:

That's amazing! And just think...before 1982 (when they were discovered) no one had a Foxtail Palm.

Yes I actually remember when they hit the nurseries here - it was BIG news!

Yes, I remember very well also...I had joined the International Palm Society in 1984 and around 1985 many seeds were distributed in Hawaii, California and Florida... that was the first wave.

I'm not sure if you know what happened around 1985 or 1987. Many poachers went into the the protected area where Wodyetia bifucata was native -- I believe around Cape York and starting cutting the trees down for the seeds. It was a horrible story...with a good ending though. Luckily, the palm grows quickly and there's many fruiting trees around the World now.

Fox Palms are field grown in many area in San Diego County now. They are a pretty inexpensive palm now. I saw many at Home Depot last Monday in 20 gallon containers 17 feet/5 meters tall for sale at $69.00....I went back this past Monday and they were all sold.

Delonix I do remember the kentias being chopped down up at Cape York - they were also stolen from private gardens and ripped out from council planted beds. Not a problem anymore - as you say, they're a lot cheaper to buy.

Bernieh:

Do you mean Foxtail Palms - Wodyetia bifurcata?

I went to the Home Depot today close to my house and they had a new shipment of 17 foot/ 5.1 meters or so tall Foxtails Palms again for $69.00...what a bargain!

Yes I do Delonix - sorry (long day at work today!) They were a novelty once - now we have them everywhere. There are rows of them at our racecourse, down many of the central median strips on our roads, along our Strand down at the front beach, at shopping centres and we've got quite a few at my school as well. Actually I used to have a small potted one (destroyed by cyclonic winds a few years ago now) - I think it's high time I got another one!

Bernieh:

Yes, they are such a popular palm here also. Their beauty and drought tolerance make them a real winner!
