Macrozamia communis - Cycad

Macrozamia communis - Cycad (Macrozamia communis - Cycad)

Macrozamia communis with cones. This is the first time I remember seeing this species with cones. It is a pretty popular cycad....it's tough as nails. Taken at Hilton San Diego Resort on Feb. 22, 2009.

Marguerite,

It a small specimen...however, I've never noticed cones on this species before. I know the San Diego Zoo and Los Angeles Arboretum have a huge collection of Macrozamia.

I have been poked by Cycads in the past I know how it feels. It amazing though when the fronds first come out they're very soft, then they are turn very stiff and hard. It was probably for protection from the Jurassic period when Dinosaurs roamed the Earth
