I have just looked in my book on insects and I beleive that this is a Cockchafer. The book says:
"Cockchafer ( Melolontha melolontha) - Easily recognised by its black pronotum and pointed abdomen, this common beetle flies noisily at night in May-June and is often called a May-bug. Adults chew the leaves of trees and shrubs, while the fat, C-shaped grubs feed on the roots of a wide range of plants, including many crops".
Milky could be right.
