we plumbed in from the down pipe, through a pipe under the path and up to the first butt, so that when the first one became full the water overspilled in to next one. The connection in the down pipe does get clogged up occassionally.

Great method! I had one place where we collected off the house in a 1000 gallon tank with a pump. Just flip a switch and start watering. This is more my scale.
