What might this become? Appeared after the lawn was mown yesterday evening.

Thanks Josie, I agree with your I.D. but sad to say it has died overnight.
Quite strange as it was moving quickly across the patio yesterday, I moved it (with gloves on!) to the shade of a shrub and it is no more.

Kate, it's a rare event to see a Caterpillar here during the day so I was surprised.
My Hosta leaves are being munched by something, but that's more likely to be slugs!

Looked in my caterpillar book& it looks like an Oak Eggar, if so the hairs can cause skin irritation.
