What an interesting feature! There is a hickory which has shaggy bark, In fact I think it's called a Shagbark Hickory, which produces edible nuts..my cousin (lives in Prince Edward Co., near the Thousand Islands) has three in a clump growing on an old hedgerow stone fence. They have produced nuts but not sure how they're doing in this drought.
