Wow thats huge hope you enjoyed your self at sea world .

14 Jul, 2018

It was loaded with fruit. I took the photo during the evening, so it appears dark.

I had an excellent time at Sea World! It was just way too hot and humid for me! UGH! It's typically cooler because it's right on Mission Bay.

15 Jul, 2018

Yes I can see all the fruit hanging in the photo Andy.

At least you went where it was cooler by the sea its the same here hot n rain for ages now yet my son said some areas have had monsoons.

15 Jul, 2018

It wasn't cooler. lol! With the heat index, it felt like 95ºF (35ºC) :>((

I usually am not so concerned about the actual temp as I am concerned about the heat index...because, that's what it feels like to the human body.

16 Jul, 2018

That s what it is like here so I can understand you not liking the heat.

I thought you said it was cooler by the bay

16 Jul, 2018

It's typically cooler by the bay; however, it can still get very hot and humid, especially when the bay water temp is close to 80ºF (27ºC), which it is right now.

16 Jul, 2018

That's why I thought you would be cooler lol I can imagine how hot it is there for you going by the we are having heat here. I see Hawaii volcano has gone up again.

16 Jul, 2018

Here,we've been in a pleasant 80H 60L(27C,16C LOW) rut. Day after day. I Like it. Best weather of the year. I really got to re pot somethings..others need pruning.

16 Jul, 2018

It's been pretty much upper 80's and lows in the upper 60's and low 70's here. It's the "July Fry".

16 Jul, 2018

After that blowtorch weather you had upper 80's is reasonable.
I like warm Andy- Hawaii like warm...but once its pushing 90f? too hot. Over that is just hide in the shade!

17 Jul, 2018

Oh yeah! That weather was so HORRIBLE! It was so extremely HOT and HUMID! It's starting again today with the strong monsoonal flow. It's not going to be as hot, just extremely humid, with this south-easterly flow.

When we had that horrible heat wave the temps were in the 80's and 90's at 1 and 2 am...many cities in San Diego County had low in the 80's! UGH! (not talking about the deserts, either).

17 Jul, 2018

The weather cast has not changed here. 80 and 60 for the duration of the forecasts. Perfect and great after this years cold spring.

17 Jul, 2018

Some things are moving Andy that waited for so long...The Pandanus new growth is a nice green and near corkscrew. It hasn't added much height- maybe I hoped for too much too soon.
Plumeria obtusa..Had a rough time this winter. I should plant it and sink or swim. Cant find a decent spot in ground.
Pink Guava..finally fruiting again. Same for the banana. Only instead of the huge bunch 2 years ago,I'm getting like 1/4 that. I wonder if gophers got to the roots in spring? It only now looks good.

18 Jul, 2018

We had a lot of cool weather in spring, also. My papayas are finally starting to really take off. My Maradol, Red Caribbean and Thai Dwarf papayas seedling are finally really growing. I finally see papaya flowers on my Red Caribbean and Thai Dwarf papaya trees.

Have you gotten the Thai Dwarf seeds to sprout?

18 Jul, 2018

I only got two..and they are slow going at 3". I just moved them out of full sun to part sun. Being in pots might not be up to mid summer sun.
Before with Papaya's I didn't get the urge to plant them Andy until winters gloom got to me-lol. Then they would grow very slow on the windowsill until spring..then by summer they were in the 6"+ range. These Thai now seem to be ready to get going.
My Mango tree's look like somebody who know's what their doing now. Very good color and yes more-lol- those panicles Andy are now looking very colorful with red stems. I have to post photos later.
All these other years, those panicles were ham fisted in shape. Now,look more typical Mango.
I cant explain the old look..but when I post you can see one that's the old way..and the newest panicle with pea sized fruit while the first blooms have 3" fruit on them waiting for September.

18 Jul, 2018

My Papayas were growing slowly during the cool weather. Now, they're all starting to take off. I'll post pics of all the Maradols, Red Caribbean and Thai Dwarf seedlings soon. There's hundreds. I have them popping up all over the yard, too. LOL!

Glad to hear your mango tree is growing well! :>)) I look forward to seeing all the mango pics, when they're all ripe. My little mango tree is putting out a lot of growth now. It should really get going next week. We're expecting sizzling hot temps for most of next week! UGH! Yuck!

21 Jul, 2018

Sacramento is in a rut of 100f or so right now..and getting warmer next week.
Just watering,re potting, pruning. No new plants. I set up my old 240 gallon aquarium after 8 years, about, of it being empty.
Nice to see some fish in it,white sands ( swimming pool filter sands look best!) and driftwood. More like a Japanese garden then a fish tank. I grouped my pink Aglonema (Iv'e posted that on goy) the big red anthurium...and my dwarf 30 year old Janet Craig around the big tank outside.
I had all the pumps and filters..just needed some new parts. So far,its good on a shoe string budget. Nice on a winters day to come. I will do a blog post on it soon.

21 Jul, 2018

Wow! We need to see photos of that gigantic aquarium. I've never seen such a large private aquarium.

It's been super hot and humid here. I'm already getting really tired of this heat, literally! The nights have been very warm, also.

24 Jul, 2018

The heatwave has hit inland too in norcal, but somehow, the bay area has been spared. Just ..80&60,lol. I tell you its one of the longest steady runs of warm in memory. Usually,we get a foggy cool break,or a real heatwave in July or both. This year has been great..for July. I can't say the same for May and June's unrelenting cool.

I did notice Andy, that you guys are getting really mellow lows...70's. That's a nice wake up temp...we might get a few in September. Some years yes, some no.

The guys in the desert are bracing for 120f and lows in the mid to upper 80's. I can't see how people can live in that for months at a time.
Great for Papaya and Mangoes!

24 Jul, 2018

Yes, May and most of June was pretty cool here. Now, it's just plain hot and humid. It tends to be pretty hot here in July, though. It's the "July Fry" which is typical for most areas off the immediate coast in southern California.

Yes, the early morning lows have mostly been in the 70's so by time I get up in the morning it's already 75 degrees. It is great for the plants which love the heat! My little mango tree is putting out a lot of growth now, finally! The papayas which were just sulking are growing so well now, also.

The deserts are just plain extremely hot! It was 121 degrees in Palm Springs yesterday. The lows are in the 90's! YUCK!

25 Jul, 2018

I wonder how stressed the desert plants are by the increasing number of 120f days per year? They can handle them, but if its never been more then days a year of that, what happens whens it weeks per summer?
I know I read that somebody left a Bizmarckia palm in a covered plastic..and it survived a few hours of 150F. A few hours. Still kind of amazing.

25 Jul, 2018

The non-native plants that grow in the desert typically get really stressed. I've seen them. The non-native plants usually get burned. Bizmarckia is most likely one that can tolerate the extreme heat. I usually see lots of very burned queen palms and plumerias out in Palm Springs. The Delonix regia just laugh at such temps. They love it!

26 Jul, 2018

I've been trying to water my larger Mango deeper. I see a few fruit shriveled. I water about every three days in under 80f weather..every other day when its hot. But I think I need to water deeper now that's its got size to it.
I see those soucal Mangoes on Google and that now classic post you did Andy on PT...And you cant tell if they water them much. They are mostly the only plant in the yard.

1 Aug, 2018

The mango trees around here have been amazing! They just put two flushes of growth in the last month.

It's been so damned hot and humid here, you just cannot believe it. The Pacific Ocean for most of San Diego's coast is running at or near record highs: 82 or 83 degrees. Amazing! The monsoonal flow is bringing really hot humid air form the Gulf of California, also. At 2:00 today the temp was 92ºF and the dew point was 70ºF (almost as bad as in Miami) and the heat index was 98ºF This still doesn't beat the July 22, 2006 severe heat index of a 132ºF. here (which is the hottest weather I've ever felt in my life!)

1 Aug, 2018

July here finished at 76f and 59f at HAYX. Here with the whole city between me and the bay,add like 3f per day warmer and that's a decent 79f and 59f July.
August has been cool!. Low 70's.

We had one warm wave all year. That was like 5 days in a row of 80's to near 90f. Since then, nada!

I haven't done much photo taking or gardening..its been home repairs- flooring and paint and cleaning out, and that aquarium. I have seeds to send people once the house is back to normal.

2 Aug, 2018

I've seen it's been cool there the last few days. You're lucky! It's been sweltering here! The nights have been so hot and humid, also. It's unbearable! It's the 5th hottest July on record in San Diego. Of course, 2006 beat it out. A few cities like Ramona and Campo beat out the 2006 heat, which is pretty amazing!

My plants are growing like crazy! Especially, the heat-loving plants. I guess I can't complain too much. lol!

2 Aug, 2018

We climber back to 80f again. The last thing I planted Andy in ground was a cutting my wife got of a Pelargonium in spring. Looks like it took too.
Otherwise..watering,some fertilizing.

4 Aug, 2018

Well, I'm going to take the no complaints back! It's really hot here and the real heat hasn't even started, according to the news. UGH!! :>)) It was 95ºF and humid today.

Good luck with the watering and fertilizing! I'm trying to keep up with everything is this horrible heat! It's not easy! My plants are looking very stressed from all this heat!

6 Aug, 2018

I see it has been hot in SD. Lows are well into the 70's and hot starts early in the day. I see in a couple of days you're going to get 90's and thunderstorms. That's got to be unusual for soucal's coastal areas.
Here? same-o. 81 today,60 low again. Nice. Just watering when they need it.
One thing I get a kick out of Andy- is seeing pea sized Mangoes on the tree while the other early bloom are plum sized , hard to compare oblong fruit to round! But you get me.

6 Aug, 2018

That's amazing to have two crops of mangoes on your mango tree at one time. I see this here, also...sometimes three crops (which isn't too common at all!).

Yes, it's been in the 90's during the day and lows mostly in the 70's sometimes mid-70's! The very warm ocean temps have been all over the news over the last three weeks. The temps have gotten even warmer, setting records every few days. So many beaches along San Diego's coast are 79 to 82 degrees. It's crazy! Record crowded at the beaches during the week days, also. There's an Excessive Heat Warning for most of Southern California through Tuesday...then a lot of monsoonal flow. It could bring thunderstorm on Thursday and Friday.
